Civil Litigation and Family Law Biography: Paul F. Shoemaker has been litigating civil disputes and practicing contested family law in Minnesota since 1986. His civil litigation practice has involved state and federal claims, involving representation of plaintiffs and defendants in real estate, construction, commercial, business and employment law disputes. In July 2011, Mr. Shoemaker and co-counsel Michael K. Hoverson jointly represented a custom metal fabricator in complex litigation involving breach of contract issues related to welding, surface preparation and priming of the fabricated apparatus. The litigation involved the application of technical and industry standards, including the American Welding Society Structural Welding Code for Steel (AWS D1.1). Following 9 days of trial, the Jury awarded the fabricator a verdict of $205,000. In his family law practice, Mr. Shoemaker has counseled and represented hundreds of individuals in disputed and undisputed divorce and paternity actions and in post-divorce issues and hearings involving modification and enforcement of child support, custody, parenting time, spousal maintenance, and other family law issues. He is experienced in district court trial and appellate matters. His trial experiences have involved disputed custody, grandparent custody, parenting time, spousal maintenance, enforcement of foreign jurisdiction orders, division of complex marital property and business valuations, and high value marital estates. He strives to find a realistic and practical solution to every problem faced by his clients through negotiated or mediated settlements. If settlement is not possible, every client receives the highest personal and professional attention and care required to advance their best interests in the court room. In 2009 Mr. Shoemaker succeeded in reversing a trial court decision that had granted legal and physical custody of two minor children to the appellant's mother. The district court decision followed a 6 day evidentiary hearing. The Court of Appeals reversed the trial court's decision and restored custody to the appellant mother.
